Based on different purposes, merchant ships can be divided into passenger ships, cargo ships, and passenger-cargo ships.
**Passenger Ships**
Passenger ships are primarily designed for transporting passengers and may also engage in mail transport. Most of them operate on a regular charter basis. The main features of passenger ships include safety, comfort, stability, and speed. The cabins are lavishly decorated with good ventilation and complete sanitary facilities. They are known for their high speed.
**Cargo Ships**
Cargo ships are designed for the primary purpose of transporting goods. They are known for their economic and practical characteristics. Cargo ships have large cargo capacities and are equipped with comprehensive loading and unloading facilities.
Freight ships are further categorized into dry cargo ships and tanker ships:
**(1) Dry Cargo Ships:** These ships are designed to carry dry goods, and their tonnage is mostly below 30,000 to 40,000 tons. They can be classified into various types based on ship structure, equipment, and the nature of the cargo they transport:
- **General Cargo Ship:** Commonly used for transporting miscellaneous packaged goods, they operate regularly on busy shipping routes.
- **Bulk Cargo Ship:** Specialized for carrying unpackaged bulk cargo.
- **Refrigerated Ship:** Specifically designed for transporting perishable goods such as fresh fruits, meat, and fish. These ships are equipped with refrigerated compartments and high-capacity refrigeration equipment.
- **Timber Ship:** Designed for transporting wood or logs, these ships have large hatch openings and no obstructions in cargo holds to facilitate loading and unloading.
- **Container Ship:** Specifically constructed to transport goods using standardized containers. They can be categorized as partial container ships, full container ships, and container vessels with interchangeable configurations.
- **Roll On/Roll Off Ship (Ro-Ro Ship):** Suited for carrying vehicles and large machinery, these ships have multiple decks and ramps for easy rolling on and off.
**(2) Tanker Ships:** Tankers are specialized vessels designed for transporting liquid cargo. They can be classified into:
- **Oil Tanker:** Mainly used for transporting liquid petroleum products, petrochemical raw materials, and crude oil. Large oil tankers, with a tonnage of over 200,000 tons, are often referred to as giant oil tankers.
- **Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Carrier:** Designed for transporting liquefied natural gas. These ships have high-pressure liquefied gas tanks, compression units, and condensers to maintain temperature and pressure within specified ranges.
In addition to the above, there are other types of ships like hovercraft and hydrofoil ships.
**Passenger and Cargo Ships**
Passenger and cargo ships are vessels that operate both passenger and freight transport. They can prioritize either passengers or cargo or provide a balanced combination of both.
