There are many types of passenger ships, and those that traverse international routes across continents are known as ocean liners. These ships typically have a tonnage of over ten thousand and are designed to withstand the challenging conditions of the open sea, including rough weather and high waves. Examples include China's "Yaohua" and "Guanghua." The North Atlantic route between Europe and America experienced a peak in passenger transportation, with ocean liners having a displacement ranging from 30,000 to 80,000 tons and a speed of over 3 knots. One of the world's renowned luxury liners, the "SS Normandie," was among them. These ships primarily carry passengers, a small amount of valuable cargo, and time-sensitive mail on fixed routes.

There are also coastal passenger ships or medium-range passenger ships that sail between various ports along the coast. Examples include passenger-cargo ships sailing on routes such as Shanghai to Dalian, Dalian to Qingdao, Guangzhou to Shantou, etc. These ships typically have a displacement of around 7,500 tons and a speed of 18 knots. Each voyage can accommodate 900 passengers and carry 2,000 tons of cargo. Because they transport both passengers and cargo, they are referred to as passenger-cargo ships.

Passenger ships that navigate between various ports along rivers are known as river passenger ships. Due to restrictions such as water depth, these ships have smaller hulls with a displacement of 3,700 tons, a speed of around 15 knots, and the capacity to carry 200 passengers and 450 tons of cargo.

For shorter journeys, there are various short-haul passenger ships and passenger ferries. Examples include ferries along the banks of the Yangtze River and ferries between islands across straits. Some ferries can also transport a certain number of vehicles.
